3/23/99 - Notice - 1330 - If you are receiving a "You must first dial a 1, then the number...." message when dialing the 664-6515 (56K V.90) access number, AND you are dialing from a Fort Walton telephone exchange, then you need to let us know. We are told by Sprint that this is caused by an incompatibilty in the telephone company's internal equipment interfaces. They have agreed to change out the offending cards, but we must supply them with the phone number having the problem. Therefore, we request that you send us an email (or call us) with your phone number, if you have expereienced this particular trouble, so that we can pass this along to Sprint. (SLM)
3/22/99 - Notice - 1330 - Well, Sprint has finally delivered the new boradband services. The 664-6515 number now has increased capacity to serve our customers better. The new interface will be activated tonite or tomorrow morning and should be available for use the following day. Use of the new interface is transparent to customers, calling the 664-6515 number will automatically direct calls to the next available modem channel. Some testing may yet need to occur, so if you are experiencing troubles logging in, give us a call and let us know. (SLM)
3/21/99 - Notice - 1730 - News Server hard drive failures (again). Drive replaced and back online by 1800. The strip set will have to be regenerated, so expect some lag on the news server this evening. (SLM)
3/17/99 - Notice - 1819 - We would like to announce that there may be some outage from 0900 until 1200 on Thursday due to some work that Sprint will be doing to resolve the problem with the "Out Of Service" message. This should only affect the 664-6515 dial in number. Thanks in advance. (JWW)
3/17/99 - Notice - 1736 - Sprint is still working on the "not in service" message. I have also been informed by Sprint that they are going to be doing some maintenance on a router that feed the FWB area to the internet at 0400 on 3/18/99. The maintenance should take about an hour. (JWW)
3/17/99 - Notice - 0925 - The problem with the "out of service" message is a problem in Sprints switch. They are still working on the problem. We are sorry for any inconvenience that has been caused. (JWW)
3/16/99 - Notice - 2213 - We are still working with Sprint to resolve the problem with the "Out of service" message. We have been working with Sprint for two days trying to resolve the problem. We will keep you informed of the status. Thank you for being patient. (JWW)
3/15/99 - Notice - 2130 - We have received reports that the phone company is playing the "Out of service" message occasionally on the 664-6515 number. I myself have seen it happen with at least 10 open lines left. We are assuming that this is due to the upcoming installation of a new PRI line. Yes indeedy, we are increasing our capacity. Please be patient while we work out the bugs the phone company is inserting :). (SLM)
3/14/99 - Notice - 1200 - The News Server died for a while today. It's back up and running now tho'. (SLM)
3/11/99 - Notice - 1935 - Hmm, the problem cleared up as soon as I called Sprint, go Figure! :) (SLM)
3/11/99 - Notice - 1930 - Yes, the Internet is broke. All Internet access in Fort Walton is down due to an unknown problem in Sprint's network. We have reported the problem and expect an answer shortly. (SLM)
3/11/99 - Notice - 0930 - It turns out that Sprint discovered that the problem was in the switch on their end. In the process of provisioning the new lines we have ordered, they messed up the order in which calls are processed, essentially killing a third of our V.90 dialin lines. (SLM)
3/10/99 - Notice - 1930 - We are experiencing difficulty with a PRI trunk line. Sprint has indicated that the problem lies in their equipment. (SLM)
3/8/99 - Notice - Sprint has had minor outages at various times today. The NOC troops in Tallahassee are blaming it on maintenance crews here in FWB. These outages are lasting less than a minute, so they are more of a nusiance than anything else. (SLM)
3/7/99 - Notice - The Shiva was restarted at 2230 to make new settings effective. (SLM)
1/29/99 - Notice - Well, it's back online. 1310(SLM)
1/29/99 - Notice - Yes, we are having difficulties with the mail server. We are working on the problem and hope to have it resolved shortly. 1230(SLM)
1/26/99 - Notice - Sprint has resolved the problem. It turns out that a maintenance crew decided to rebuild a three phase electrical panel and turned off power to the Denton office (I was right all along), then proceeded to tear apart the panel. After an hour without power, the UPS's died and the routers, T-1's, etc., went offline, killing all of the Internet service in Fort Walton. I suppose that by the time the Network Operations Center in Tallahassee noticed this, the electricians had the panel well and truly disassembled, of course. It took them some time to restore the power grid, once they had it back together. Anyway, service was restored by 1915 local. Many thanks to the Sprint crew in Tally for keeping us informed, and personal TNX to Jody for watching the phones while I went to dinner. (SLM)
1/26/99 - Notice - Well, it's 6pm and Sprint strikes again. The T-1 is down. Sprint claims its a router in Tallahassee that has died, but to me it looks like the local router at the Sprint facility in town has died. For now, all we can do is watch the situation. The effect of this is that local sites here at arc.net will work fine, in fact, you can even pick up your mail (already stored on the mail server), but service to the Internet at large will be blocked. (SLM)
1/26/99 - Notice - The news server was down for about 5 minutes today as I replaced another SCSI drive. Back online and running fine. (SLM)
1/21/99 - Notice - The problem turned out to be two problems. The system experienced a hard drive crash around 0700. This caused to the news service to stop running while NT tried to check out the drive. It turned out to be a spare IDE drive that wasn't used to run either the DNS or NNTP services. The second problem showed it's head as I was trying to put the system back together. It would variously report either 64M or 128M of memory or just beep. I replaced the two 32M chips and we are back in service. News service may be a bit slow as the Striped set regenerates. (SLM)
1/21/99 - Notice - The News Server died because of a hard drive failure. Service will be restored as soon as I rebuild the system. (SLM)
1/20/99 - Notice - Minor glitch on the 664 line necessitated the restart of the 664 dial in server around 1800. Service was restored within 5 minutes. Kudos to Mike! (SLM)
1/19/99 - Notice - The 862 Dial in numbers experienced a short downtime for maintenance this morning (0015) to make security patches take hold. Service was restored shortly. TNX (SLM)
1/3/99 - Notice - The 862 Dial in numbers experienced a short downtime for unexpected maintenance this morning. Service was restored shortly. TNX (SLM)
1/1/99 - Happy - New - Year! TNX (SLM)
12/28/98 - Notice - The 56K dialin server is undergoing unscheduled maintenance this morning. Users attempting to use the 56K line may experience periodic interrupts due to this maintenance activity. In the mean time, the lower speed access lines are available for backup, try 862-0929. TNX (SLM)
12/22/98 - Notice - A long overdue overhaul is being performed on both the arc.net and users websites. We are essentially doing a spring cleaning a few monthes early. During this process we will be temporarily making some portions of the site inaccessible for short periods as we work. TNX (SLM)
12/21/98 - Notice - Sometime sunday, the mail server crapped out. It was rebooted and placed back into service monday morning. Additional testing did not show an immediate cause for the failure, so it is being monitored closely. TNX (SLM)
12/9/98 - Notice - Sprint found the problem in their DMS-100 switch, they had a DTC interface card crapped out. It has evidently been giving them intermittan troubles for some time. After they completed the repair, we had to perform a hard reboot on our switch to make it recognize the repaired PRI line. This happened around 1650, knocking off all digital customers (664-6515 and 267-1007) for about 10 minutes. We are watching the circuits to insure that everything is good. TNX (SLM)
12/8/98 - Notice - We are *STILL* experiencing a line outage with Sprint. If the 664-6515 number gives you a "fast busy" then try access via the 862-0929 number. Please be patient, we are working to fix the problem. TNX (SLM)
12/7/98 - Notice - We are still experiencing a line outage with Sprint. The problem has been reported and we are waiting for them to fix it. This is affecting access on the 664-6515 and 267-1007 numbers. (SLM)
12/7/98 - Notice - We experienced a problem with an access server this afternoon. This affected connectivity on the 664-6515 and 267-1007 numbers for about 15 minutes. The access router was restarted and back in service by 1630. (SLM)
11/25/98 - Notice - We experienced a network outage for about 45 minutes around noon today. This was caused by a router failure upstream in the SprintLink domain (somewhere around Fort Worth, TX). This had the effect of making several large segments of the internet disappear for the duration of the outage. Popular sites such as dejanews.com, yahoo.com and webtv were inaccessable to thousands during this outage. The router was repaired and back in service by 1300. (SLM)
11/23/98 - Notice - We are still experiencing trouble with one or more PRI lines on the 56K dialup. The Sprint folks will be working on them today, so expect intermittant outages. This trouble has existed from before the fiber outage, but we have not been able to get Sprint to completely fix the problem. (SLM)
11/20/98 - Notice - We are getting ready for the Silicon Beach Expo today, come see us at the show this weekend. (SLM)
11/20/98 - Notice - The counter application took a dive again sometime yesterday or today. I have reconstructed the data file as best I can. If you are experiencing trouble with your counter, please call and let me know the URL and count and I can manually updated the datafile. We *ARE* in the process of converting to a new counter format. Those who wish to change to the newer counter can email me to find out the details. I will post a link here when I get a chance. (SLM)
11/19/98 - Notice - Sprint found a bad High Speed card in one of their cabinets. They have repaired it and restored service. However, we don't think this has fixed the problem. We will continue to monitor the situation. (SLM)
11/18/98 - Notice - For those of you who experienced trouble connecting or using the internet today, thank Sprint. A Sprint contractor was working on the lines in the area of our facility and accidently broke a fiber (T-3) delivering service to just about all the ISP's in Fort Walton. In addition, this break caused massive phone outages between exchanges and reportedly knocked the 911 service offline for parts of Fort Walton and Mary Esther. (SLM)
11/18/98 - Notice - We have a trouble ticket open with Sprint to chase down the intermittant PRI line troubles we have been experiencing. This problem is especially bad in the early evenings as the dialin server begins to fill up. Customers have reported poor connection rates, trouble staying connected or inability to login. We are working on the problem, but are dependenant on Sprint to locate the problem in their lines. As they work on the lines, expect temporary outages. (SLM)
10/15/98 - Notice - The news server was down for about 4 hours yesterday, I replaced one of the harddrives in the striped parity set. Since the news articles reside on this disk volume, and it was totally trashed by the rebuild, it will be a few days before the articles in the newsgroups regain thier momentum. Note, that every time you connect and try to get headers for your favorite groups, the server will kick off a session with our news supplier. This means that those groups favored locally will refill the fastest. As always, flames go to /dev/null, comments and questions to the usual place, admin@arc.net. (SLM)

10/14/98 - Note - THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! We asking all users to verify access to your personal website, especially if you use Front Page! If there are any problems, report them to the usual place, admin@arc.net. (SLM)
10/13/98 - Announcement - As called for in our expansion plan, we are upgrading the web server machine. I have built and configured a Dual Pentium II 333 machine with 27 GB of storage space to be the new home for our all of our web customers. As part of this expansion, over the next few days, all web sites will be moved to this new machine. The IP addresses of all websites (except www.arc.net) will stay the same. This should not cause any problems with access to machine, as user accounts and directory permissions are being transferred along with the web content files. However, as the web sites are added (5 at a time), both servers will be rebooted and will be unavailable for a period of upto five minutes. We apologize for the inconvenience, in advance. We ask all developers to test access to your website, especially if you use Front Page, by uploading some files over the next few days to ensure that all is well. If there are any problems, report them to the usual place, admin@arc.net. (SLM)
09/25/98 - Announcement - After an all night session with Sprint, the problem with the 56K Dialin server was resolved. Over the previous two or three days, customers reported sporadic problems with line noise on the 664-6515 number. Since this is a digital line, we were skeptical at first (digital lines ain't supposed to have line noise!) However, we quickly verified the reports of low connect speeds and dropped lines ourselves by testing here at the shop. Once we reported the problem to Sprint, it took them about 6 hours to dispatch a technician to check it out. When we showed him the problem he was convinced there was a short on the line somewhere. We worked through the night with Sprint to resolve the problem. The problem eventually was determined to be a bad splice in the phone lines somewhere between the store and the Sprint Central Office. The cable trolls were called out to fix the problem and we were back in service between 9am and 10 am this morning. (SLM)
09/24/98 - Notice - We are currently experiencing problems with our 56K access lines. Customers have reported intermittant less than normal connect speeds. I have called in the problem with Sprint and they are continuing to find the problem. (SLM)
09/24/98 - Notice - If you have a 28.8 or 33.6 KB modem, please use the 862-0929 and 862-5833 access numbers. Calling the 56K dialup access line with a 33.6 or slower modem is wasteful of bandwidth and will result in network congestion at peak usage times. Please be considerate to others and use the access number engineered for your modem type.
Thanks!(SLM)
Notes From the

Hello and welcome to Arc.net! While we here at Arcnet believe that our
business is all about providing our customers with Internet and value added services, it
is our personal intent to provide our customers with the highest level of service and
quality achieved through a commitment to excellence. Our technical help desk for Internet
questions is open weekdays (M-F) from 10 AM to 6 PM, and on Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM.
I can be reached via email at admin@arc.net for
questions of a technical nature. The following essay has been provided by the management
as a starting focus for new users of the Internet.
What is The Internet?
Imagine a room filled with spiders, each spinning its own web. The webs are so
interconnected that the spiders can travel freely within this maze. You now have a
simplified view of the internet--a global collection of many different types of computers
and computer networks that are linked together. Just as a telephone enables you to talk to
someone on the other side of the earth who also has a phone, the Internet enables a person
to sit at his computer and exchange information with other computers and computer users
anyplace in the world.
Some refer to the internet as the information superhighway. Just as a road allows travel through different areas of a country, so the Internet allows information to flow through many different interconnected computer networks. As messages travel, each network that is reached contains information that assists in connecting to the adjacent network. The final destination may be in a different city or country.
Each network can "speak" with its neighbor network by means of a common set of rules created by the Internet designers Worldwide, how many networks are connected? Some estimates say over 30,000. According to recent surveys, these networks connect over 10,000,000 computers and some 30,000,000 users throughout the world. It is estimated that the number of connected computers is doubling each year.
What can people locate on the Internet? It offers a rapidly growing collection of information, with topics ranging from medicine to science and technology. It features exhaustive material on the arts as well as research material for students and coverage of recreation, entertainment, sports, shopping, and employment opportunities. The Internet provides access to almanacs, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and maps.
Services and Resources of the Internet
A COMMON resource provided by The Internet is a worldwide system for sending and receiving
E-mail. In fact, E-mail represents a large portion of all internet traffic and is for many
the only Internet resource the use. How does it work? To answer that question, let's
review the ordinary mail system first.
Imagine that you live in Canada and wish to send a letter to your daughter living in Moscow. After properly addressing the envelope, you mail it, starting the letter's journey. At a postal facility, the letter is routed to the next location, perhaps a regional or national distribution center, and then to a local post office near you daughter.
A similar process occurs with E-mail. After your letter is composed on your computer, you must specify an E-mail address that identifies your daughter ("sissy@rubbles.com"). Once you send this electronic letter, it travels from your computer, often through a device called a modem, which connects your computer to the Internet via the telephone network. Off it goes, bound for various computers that act like local and national postal routing facilities. They have enough information to get the letter to a destination computer, where your daughter can retrieve it (like a P.O. Box).
Unlike the regular mail, E-mail often reaches its destination, even on other continents, in minutes or less unless some part of the network is heavily congested or temporarily out of order. When your daughter inspects her electronic mailbox, she will discover your E-mail. The speed of E-mail and ease with which it can be sent even to multiple recipients all over the world make it a popular form of communication.
Newsgroups
Another popular service is called Usenet. Usenet offers access to newsgroups for group discussions on specific topics. Some newsgroups focus on buying or selling various consumer items. There are thousands of newsgroups, and once a user has gained access to Usenet, there is no cost to subscribe to them.
Let's imagine that someone has joined a newsgroup involved in stamp collecting. As new messages about this hobby are sent by others subscribing to this group, the messages become available to this newcomer. This person reviews not only what someone has sent to the newsgroup but also what others have written in response. If, for example, someone requests information about a particular stamp series, shortly afterward there may be responses from around the world, offering information that would be immediately available to all who subscribe to this newsgroup.
A variation of this idea is the Bulletin Board System (BBS) . (Arc.Net's BBS is located at BBS.arc.net). BBSs are similar to Usenet, except that all files are located on a single computer, usually maintained by one person or group. The contents of newsgroup reflects the varied interests, viewpoints, and moral values of those who use them, so discretion is needed.
File Sharing and Topic Searching
One of the original Internet goals was global information sharing. The teacher mentioned
in the previous article located another educator on the Internet who was willing to share
already developed course materials. Within minutes the files were transferred, despite a
2,000-mile distance.
What help is available when one does not know where a subject may be located within the Internet? Just as we locate a phone number by using a telephone directory, a user may find locations of interest on the Internet by first gaining access to what are known as search engines (i.e., Yahoo, Lycos, Altavista, etc. are some popular engines.). The user supplies a word or a phrase; the site then replies with a list of Internet locations where information can be found. Generally, the search is free and takes only a few seconds!
